'Don't let our lovely local become just another pub'

VILLAGERS CAMPAIGNING TO PRESERVE HORSE & GROOM'S 'UNSPOILT' CHARACTER
VILLAGERS have launched a campaign to stop their quirky, historic local from being turned into a generic pub.
Residents are joining forces amid fears that the charm and character of the Horse and Groom, in Linby, will be ruined.
The Heineken-owned pub, in Main Street, is full of nooks and crannies, boasting wood-burning stoves, wooden beams and many original 1930s features. It's believed to date back to the 17th century, and there is a mention of it in the county archives in 1823.
Boasting a main bar, a snug, lounges dedicated to Lord Byron and the Abbey and a former conservatory named the Workshop, the historic interior has been rated by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) as being of regional importance.
Alarm bells started ringing when word got out that landlord Phil Martin was leaving in August and boards appeared outside the pub advertising for a manager under Star Pubs’ Just Add Talent scheme for new or more established operators.
As leaseholder, Mr Martin has invested in the pub and run it like an independent business.
A refurbishment is also planned, including the installation of televisions showing Sky Sports.
