Calls for 'divisive' Union Flag plan to be scrapped

A CAMPAIGN has been started against a plan to put up 164 Union Flags in Nottinghamshire which "does not reflect the inclusive community spirit" of the county.

The resident who has set up a petition argues that Reform-led Nottinghamshire County Council's move to fly the flags is "symbolically divisive".

Announcing the £75,000 plans, the authority's leader, Councillor Mick Barton, said the idea "has the potential to strengthen community spirit and cohesion".

The move - criticised by opposition parties but welcomed by some residents - has now triggered a petition calling for the "costly" decision to be reversed.

The change.org petition - currently signed by 3,600 people - was created by a resident who argues that the money could be better spent.

"It feels like a divisive gesture that does not reflect the inclusive community spirit of Nottinghamshire," the resident, who signed as "Disgusted of Nottingham", said.
