41,000 drivers caught by same speed camera

MORE than 41,000 drivers have been caught out by a speed camera on a Nottinghamshire A-road since its installation a year-and-a-half ago.

- By JOEL MOORE

A speed and red light camera was introduced on the A38 in Kirkby-in-Ashfield by police in August 2023 due to a "worrying" number of speeding offences. In the 20 months since, at least 41,675 motorists have been punished for travelling in excess of the 30mph limit, figures obtained through a Freedom of Information (Fol) request show. At least £4.1m worth of fines will have been threatened during that period, but police said almost half of offences were resolved with speed awareness courses instead.

The data was uncovered by Huthwaite gas engineer Gary Eyre, who sent the request due to the number of people he knew that had been caught.

"I go into about 10 houses every day and everybody knows someone who's been done. My wife has been done by it twice," he said, describing the number he got back as "flabbergasting".
