CEA pushes for vehicle-to-grid reverse charging

V2G is a concept under which EVS supply electricity back into the public power grid to meet energy demand.

In a report on V2G reverse charging, the CEA has sought incorporation of suitable provisions for reactive power compensation for bi-directional charging infrastructure in the CEA (Technical Standards for Connectivity to the Grid) Regulations.

The power ministry had in March asked the CEA to frame guidelines for reverse charging of grid from batteries of EVs. A committee was then constituted under the chairmanship of member (grid operation and distribution), CEA on 11 April.

Its report looks at the services that EVS can provide to the power system through smart charging, the challenges, implementation requirements and way forward for the smooth integration of EVs in the grid.

The call for standardization comes at a time when industry has raised concerns over battery standards saying it may slow down battery adoption.

The Centre has been working on the standards for EV batteries and swapping. But these have not been finalized amid resistance from the industry.
