ArcelorMittal to set up 3 scrap facilities

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Ltd plans to establish three scrap processing plants in Gujarat and Maharashtra. This move comes as leading steel manufacturers in India expect challenges in meeting their scrap requirements via imports.
The firm will invest around ₹100 crore to set up three dedicated scrap processing centres - one at the flagship plant in Hazira, another in Ahmedabad, and the third in Khopoli, by December 2024. The move will also help it achieve its carbon emissions reduction targets by maximizing the utilization of steel scrap. "We aim to significantly increase the scrap mix, while reducing dependence on steelmaking from primary raw material such as iron ore and coal," Dilip Oommen, chief executive, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, said.
