Telecom operators dial govt for power reforms as costs rise
Mint Kolkata
|October 25, 2025
The calls we make, the videos we stream, and the internet we use all depend on mobile towers that run on electricity.
Telcos want the government to cut electricity tariffs.
But rising power cost, lack of priority power connections, and complicated green energy rules are making it harder for India’s telecom tower firms to keep digital networks running smoothly.
Telecom operators and telecom tower companies have urged the government to cut power tariff, ensure 24x7 supply, speed up smart meter installation, and facilitate their use of renewable energy.
Currently, 35% of the telecom industry’s operating expenditure (opex) is spent on electricity costs. Telecom tower companies typically pass on energy-related costs to telecom operators.
