HEALTH INSURANCE WON'T COVER TRUE COST OF AGEING
Mint Kolkata
|May 08, 2026
Most recent conversations around Bima Sugam, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irdai) -backed digital insurance marketplace, have focused on access—simpler purchases, standardized products, and possibly lower costs through zero-commission policies.
If executed well, this could reduce friction in buying and managing insurance. But for households dealing with ageing parents, this addresses only part of the financial reality. The more relevant question is not whether insurance is easier to buy, but whether it meaningfully covers the cost of ageing.
India is at an inflexion point. The Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASD said about 12% of the population is elderly, projected to rise to 319 million by 2050. This demographic shift will influence how families plan and allocate resources. Health insurance is central to household finance. The Irdai reports insurers settled 32.6 million health insurance claims worth ₹94,248 crore in 2024-25. Health insurance is now the largest non-life insurance segment, accounting for over 40% of premiums.
