US President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled sweeping new tariffs that could shake the global pharmaceutical trade, announcing duties of up to 100 per cent on imports of branded and patented drugs starting October 1, 2025. The move poses a significant challenge to India’s pharmaceutical sector, one of the largest suppliers to the American market.

“Starting October Ist, 2025, we will be imposing a 100 per cent Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America.”

‘The former Republican leader clarified that the exemption applies only if construction of a US-based facility has begun. “IS BUILDING’ will be defined as ‘breaking ground’ and/or ‘under construction’ There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has started) he added.
