Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has formally recommended the name of Justice Surya Kant to the Union government as his successor.
Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after CJI Gavai, is set to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, following CJI Gavai's retirement a day earlier.
A press note from the Supreme Court on Monday stated, “Hon'ble the Chief Justice of India, Mr Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, recommends the name of Hon'ble Mr Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor to be the 53rd Chief Justice of India.”
Justice Gavai, who took oath as the 52nd CJI on May 14 this year, forwarded the recommendation to the Union law ministry in line with the established convention governing the appointment of the country's top judge.
