Dad saves sleeping kids as fire guts home

Repairs will cost thousands of pounds.Rhys Gough was asleep in his home at Lower Royal Lane in Abertillery when a noise in the attic woke him around 11.30pm on February 28.

Believing it was linked to the boiler or even water running, he opened the hatch and saw flames, which then grew bigger due to the influx of air.

He quickly grabbed his sleeping children and began making his way downstairs.

Already, his mother - who lives opposite - had woken, smelling fire, and called the fire brigade.

As she made her way to the house, Rhys was exiting with his children.

His sister Kirsty Hayward said: “He was lucky to get out when he did”

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which had damaged the first floor, attic and roof.
