China's emerging events and how they affect national security

China is seen as a future global power, but many view China now as struggling with internal issues.

Major political and economic issues are facing China, which may disturb the situation outside its borders, such as the Philippines.

China’s aging population, soaring youth unemployment, and increased local government debt all contributed to its economic slowdown. Compounding these are mounting reports of internal disputes at the highest echelons of leadership. As such, China is under pressure to preserve stability and control.

Although these are internal issues of China, they may affect its actions abroad. As China researcher Dr. Elizabeth Economy aptly explained in her book “The World According to China,” "The more pressure the Communist Party faces at home, the more it seeks external enemies to redirect public frustration and consolidate power." The West Philippine Sea (WPS) is one of the most obvious areas for China for this type of pressure.

Our nation is already feeling the impacts of the expanded presence in the WPS. Harassing and blocking of our fisherfolks have been observed.

The nation has preserved its position legally and calmly despite this. Through mainly the Hague verdict of 2016, we have affirmed our sovereignty and sovereign rights in the key areas of the WPS. Yet, it is very clear that we must be prepared for more troubles ahead.
