What does it mean to be a Mail & Guardian 200 Young South African? We’ve been drawing up this list for 20 years and are immensely proud of the thousands of names we now count among our cohort. But the common thread between them is not easy to spot.
We’ve featured world-renowned sports stars and community gardeners, glamorous movie stars and determined lab workers. Social media numbers, fame and fortune have never been a factor in our selection process.
So what is it?
Two decades ago, the M&G launched “100 Young South Africans you must take to lunch”. That tagline was forgotten as the project soared and its intake doubled. But there’s value in remembering it two decades later.
