Manchester-born Lucy Powell defeated fellow MP Bridget Phillipson by 54 per cent to 46 per cent to be named Labour's deputy leader yesterday.

The former Parrs Wood High School pupil, who has represented the Manchester Central constituency since 2012, had been part of Sir Keir Starmer's cabinet until she was sacked as Commons leader last month.
