Youngsters' taste of competition
Llanelli Star
|January 21, 2026
WATCH out, Nigella Lawson and Gordon Ramsay - there’s some competition for you on the horizon from the talented schoolchildren of Llanelli and Burry Port.
Competitors hard at work in the Bryngwyn kitchen.
(LLANELLI ROTARY CLUB)
Llanelli Rotary Club staged its 12th annual Young Chef competition at Bryngwyn School in Llanelli.
“Tt was a wonderful occasion and a great showpiece for the culinary skills of young Llanelli and Burry Port pupils and budding chefs,’ said Llanelli Rotary president Julie Jones.
The title of Llanelli Rotary Club Young Chef 2026 went to Phoebe Whitburn, a 14-year-old pupil from Glan-y-mor School in Burry Port.
The winning two-course meal for two consisted of pomegranate chicken with almond couscous, with a dessert of peach and almond slices topped with creme fraiche.
“It was a well-planned menu, cooked with a sense of style and well-presented,” said judge Hamish Burns, owner and head chef at The Moat House in Kidwelly.
His judging colleague Katie Duffy, chef at Llanelli’s Halfway Hotel and a winner of the 2020 Llanelli Rotary Club Young Chef competition, was equally impressed.

Right views not up for debate on free speech
UNIVERSITIES have always been regarded as beacons of innovation, research, high-level skills and engines of cutting-edge thinking. So when populist leaders and wannabe tyrants consult the online 'How To Be a Dictator' manual, they usually find university-bashing high on the list.
