Rowley did well - but Saints job brings a whole different level of scrutiny

WITH DAVID LYON

IN sport, there's no hiding from results - and at St Helens, nothing is more unforgiving than the expectation to reach Old Trafford.

So, while Paul Wellens’ departure as head coach might not have come as a shock after three years of falling short of a Grand Final, the way he was shuffled out the door leaves a thoroughly bitter taste in the mouth.

For news of his sacking to leak within 24 hours of that dismal Hull KR defeat speaks volumes about the turmoil rumbling beneath the surface at the club.

After 495 appearances in the Redvee, collecting every trophy and individual honour going, Wellens deserved so much more than this undignified sendoff.

Saints supporters have never settled for mediocrity - entertainment is demanded. Yet this season, while the defence was often solid, the attacking play was painfully flat.

Despite a long campaign, Wellens never landed on a settled spine, chopping and changing up to round 27 and into the playoffs.

When things unravelled, there was precious little evidence of a plan B, and his handling of interchanges and the wider squad left a lot to be desired.
