John Carter Cash tells MARION McMULLEN his famous parents Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash would have approved of his musical tribute to their lives

I wanted it to be a story of their love...

A THING CALLED LOVE: Johnny and June in 1968

I’ve been around all that sort of thing for so long. First I saw the real thing, then I’ve seen my parents portrayed on stage ... I've seen it all. At this point in my life, it’s hard for me to turn off the switch.

My parents brought me on stage on US national television when I was one month old. I took a bow when I was three years old on stage on my dad’s show, and I travelled on the road with them for most of the tours that they did. Then, when I was 15, I started playing guitar on the road shows with my parents and I did that until they retired and I've worked in the studio ever since.

I produced some stuff for them and a lot of stuff for other people.

My parents had the idea of a musical about their lives when they were alive. They loved Broadway. We would go to New York City and go and see plays when I was growing up. It was a big part of their lives and my dad’s favourite play was Big River with music by Roger Miller.

When I found out that Des McAnuff, who co-wrote this play, had also worked on Big River, well, it just seemed serendipitous. It tied it all in and it just seemed like the right thing to do.
