'Homes plan will power city's next renaissance'

MAJOR plans for a new Liverpool community will "power the next stage of the city's renaissance".

Those were the words of city council leader Liam Robinson as his cabinet signed off on a project to build 800 homes on the city's southern waterfront.

Earlier this month the first image and details of the planned new multi-generational community at Festival Gardens were released, along with news that developers Urban Splash and Igloo would be behind the scheme.

The two developers are proposing to build 34 different styles of housing on the large site that hosted the 1984 International Garden Festival before later being used as a tip site.

After the council bought the land, a huge remediation project has taken place to prepare it for housing.

On Tuesday evening, the cabinet gave its approval to the scheme, meaning that a planning application will now be put together, with a view to submission in around 12 months.
