NEW DOCUMENTS REVEAL SCALE OF LOST FUNDING - AND REASONS FOR IT

- By DAVID HUMPHREYS Local Democracy Reporter

Council loses £13m to unrecoverable debts

LIVERPOOL Council has lost more than £13m in debt it cannot recover in the last financial year.

As part of its financial management programme, the city council identifies a range of funds it is owed by debtors and how it may be able to reclaim them.

Some funds are deemed uneconomic to recover, however.

These include where they are statute barred (meaning a creditor has run out of time to take legal action to enforce a debt), a resident has died leaving no estate, or a resident has moved out of the area and, following searches, cannot be traced.
