Revamp of Glencairn House nears completion

The refurbishment of Dumbarton’s oldest surviving building to transform it into a combined museum, library and community facility is expected to be completed by July this year.

Glencairn House, on the town’s High Street, was built in 1623 for the 7th Earl of Glencairn and has a significant history as a townhouse for powerful Scottish families in the Royal Burgh.

Page\Park, the architect in charge of the project, has been commissioned by West Dunbartonshire Council to transform the B listed building into a new public lending library and local history museum for the town.

The £7.2million project is one of three being undertaken in the area as part of a £19.9m Levelling Up award made to the council who has also invested £2.2m.

The Levelling Up Fund is a UK government initiative for regenerating town centres and high streets, upgrading local transport, and investing in cultural and heritage assets.
