Expert calls for clearer rules on robot carers in the home

INCREASING USE OF SOCIALLY-ASSISTIVE TECH RAISES ISSUES OF SAFETY AND PRIVACY
HOME-BASED robots are playing an ever-expanding role in the care of the elderly and disabled - but tailored rules governing their use are needed.
This recommendation is contained in a report on socially-assistive robots (SARs), by Professor Massimiliano Zecca, an expert in healthcare technology at Loughborough University.
SARs such as interactive companions and care aids, are increasingly being used to support independent living.
These include devices such as ElliQ, which offers reminders and conversation to older adults, and smart assistants including Alexa and Google Home that help manage everyday tasks.
While these technologies promise enormous benefits - reducing loneliness, supporting overstretched carers, and easing pressure on the NHS - they also raise questions about safety, privacy and trust.
Currently, there is no clear framework in the UK to regulate the use of care robots in people's homes.
