Lurid, melodramatic thriller is perfect viewing for stormy day

Temperatures dropped, storm clouds gathered, torrential rain fell, thunder pounded and lightning crackled - perfect weather for watching Footsteps in the Fog.

With its gloomy Victorian setting, swirling mists, mysterious mansions and nefarious goings-on-including murder, poisonings and blackmail - the 1955 crime thriller is not a watch for a sunny day.

By coincidence Film 4 screened it on a stormy mid-week afternoon. Now it's back in the schedules it will be shown ad infinitum.

Without giving too much away, it is the story of gold-digger Stephen Lowry, who is blackmailed by housemaid Lily when she discovers he has murdered his wife.

While stringing her along, Lowry plots to murder her, too, while romancing Elizabeth Travers, the daughter of his rich boss.
