Bush's Gavin Rossdale bemoans 'tragic' loss of small music venues

With his band Bush, Gavin Rossdale managed what some of Britain's biggest bands of the 1990s failed to do: break America, where they have gone on to have more success than at home.

But the London-born singer learned his trade in the pubs and small venues of his home city, honing his act ahead of the band's breakthrough - something which will not be an option for today's young musicians, due to rapid venue closures.

According to the 59-year-old singer, Bush, who are best known for their 1996 US number one album Razorblade Suitcase and UK top 10 single Swallowed, would not have been successful without playing small venues relentlessly in their early years.

"It's tragic... I mean, it doesn't make sense,” he says.
