Priests, residents recall encounter with Pope

It was a historic moment as it was the first papal mass held in the Arabian Peninsula. But for Fr Michael Cardoz, priest at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai, it was a personal and once-in-a-lifetime experience for him as it was his 67th birthday that day.

Hours before the mass at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Fr Cardoz and about 15 other priests from the UAE led by Bishop Emeritus Paul Hinder —who was then the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia — met Pope Francis at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi, as they were introduced one by one to the head of the Catholic Church.
