Trump's comments marked one of the clearest expressions of US support for Iranian protesters
US President Donald Trump and senior Iranian officials traded sharp threats on Friday as protests driven by Iran's collapsing currency entered a sixth day, further inflaming tensions between Washington and Tehran months after US airstrikes on Iranian soil.
The demonstrations, sparked by the rapid fall of the rial to historic lows began as economic protests led by shopkeepers in Tehran and other cities. They have since taken on political overtones, with some chants reportedly directed against Iran's Islamic system. Unconfirmed reports suggested at least five people were killed in clashes during violent demonstrations, though Iranian authorities have not verified the figures.
