Srinagar's Defining Sermon
Kashmir Observer
|MARCH 2, 2026 ISSUE
At Jamia Masjid, a young Iranian cleric urged unity across sectarian lines, leaving a mark that outlived politics and power.
A plane landed in Srinagar one winter morning in 1980 carrying a cleric that almost nobody in Kashmir recognized.
Ali Hosseini Khamenei was forty-one years old, recently dispatched from a revolutionary Iran that was still finding its feet on the world stage.
The crowds gathered at the airport before dawn, drawn by rumours of an important visitor, and they waited through delays and disappointments until he finally appeared the following day.
What happened over the next forty-eight hours would outlast every political calculation that brought him there.
Khamenei moved through Srinagar with smile and spirit. He visited the Hazratbal Shrine, where a single hair of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, draws the faithful across generations.
He walked the halls of the Zadibal Imambara, among the oldest Shia gathering spaces in the city. He sat with Ayatollah Syed Yusuf Mosavi, the most respected Shia cleric in Kashmir, whose family had maintained spiritual connections with Iran's religious scholars since memory began.
These visits strengthened ancient bonds that had brought Persian pirs across the mountains in the fourteenth century to transform Kashmiri culture at its roots.
But the moment that would resound through decades arrived on a Friday at Jamia Masjid.
This wooden mosque with four minarets has anchored religious life in Srinagar for six hundred years. Its courtyard swells with thousands every Friday, men from every village and town gathering to hear the khutbah that centers the week's most important prayers.
On this particular Friday, Khamenei entered alongside Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq, the chief preacher of Kashmir and the most powerful Sunni voice in the region. The two men stood together before the congregation, and Khamenei stepped forward to speak.
