Red Tape Derails J&K's Promised Infrastructure

Through your esteemed publication, I wish to draw urgent attention to the prolonged and painful delay in the Singhpora-Vailoo and Sudhmahadev-Dranga tunnel projects—developments once envisioned as transformative lifelines for South Kashmir and the Chenab Valley. Sadly, nearly nine years after their sanction under the Bharatmala Pariyojana in 2017, these projects remain buried under layers of bureaucratic red tape and policy ambiguity.

Originally proposed to bypass the treacherous Sinthan Top Road and establish all-weather connectivity, the tunnels were tendered in 2023, only to face an unexpected setback when the bids were cancelled in 2024. The reason: refusal of security clearance to the lowest bidder by the Union Home Ministry. Since then, repeated political assurances including those from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and state officials have failed to translate into progress.
