Degrees Without Direction

Young Kashmiris, degree in hand, are returning home not to take up careers, but to sit behind shop counters, wait for exam results, or prepare for another shot at a government job that may never come.

As highlighted by a story published in this paper, the valley’s education system has been producing graduates trained for a world that no longer exists. A generation was told that if you became an engineer, a doctor, or a civil servant, success was guaranteed. That story has expired. Yet our classrooms continue to push students into streams without asking if these fields still hold opportunity - or whether they suit the child at all.
