Free breakfasts help pupils work up hunger for learning

FAMILIES at Salmestone Primary School in Margate are set to benefit from a free breakfast club, launched this week as part of a national rollout to support working parents and boost children’s wellbeing.

The club offers every pupil a healthy breakfast and half an hour of supervised care before the start of the school day.

The initiative is among 750 new breakfast clubs being introduced at primary schools across the country, with plans to expand the scheme to every primary over the next five years.

Salmestone previously operated a paid breakfast service, but new government funding has made it possible to offer the provision free of charge to all families.

It is estimated that the move could save parents up to £450 a year per child, and provide 95 hours of free childcare during the school year.
