SEVEN years is the length of time it takes a columnist to forget that their funny joke was cracked by someone else seven years previously.

And seven years is the term of office for a President of Ireland this is no coincidence.

So I brace myself, again, in preparation for the many columns we'll soon see in which columnists quip: "Everybody else is running for President so I will too".

I'd like to think that you and I are a bit better than that.

Sure, it's a handy one for a columnist to lash out, but it's not original or funny even though the columnist might think it's both.

Instead, I'll write a bit here about columnists quipping that they'll run for president instead of quipping that I'll run for president myself.
