And the former Old Trafford striker also claims club legends like Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney criticising Amorim's tactics is likely getting inside players' heads and making them question the manager.

"It's embarrassing if you're going to say the main reason for the downturn is because they play a back-three," said Owen (inset).

"Some great teams have played with a back-three. I'm not saying that's my favourite formation, and I'm not saying Amorim is right to be steadfast in his beliefs in that formation.
