Midsummer marvels

June can sometimes be a patchy month weather-wise with plenty of rain and low temperatures.

However, as we pass through the summer solstice, things start to pick up. The longer daylight hours and inevitable rain ensure plenty of green growth and while we could always do with more sun, there are many flowers and plants to enjoy in the garden this month.

Among the beauties that I admire is Sidalcea 'My Love', also known as False Mallow. It's a very pretty herbaceous border plant.

The pale pink flowers have a lightness of touch that lends an elegant air to this plant. Easy to grow, it likes a moist but well-drained soil in full or partial sun. 'Elsie Heugh' is another delightful cultivar with fringed petals.

It will flower from June to September if regularly deadheaded.
