Taoiseach slams Trump's vow to slap 50% levy on goods from bloc

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin has told US President Donald Trump "we do not need to go down this road" of 50% tariffs on Ireland and EU countries.

Trump, who had announced a 90-day pause on 20% tariffs on goods entering the US from the EU until mid-July, yesterday announced the massive tariffs from June 1.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump suggested negotiations with the EU were "going nowhere".

He said: "The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with.
