United take late lead only for calamity keeper Andre to throw it away

- DAVID MCDONNELL

LYONHEARTS LET DOWN

IN Europe's gastronomic capital, Andre Onana made a dog's dinner of two simple saves on a night he needed to be perfect.

After trading public insults with Lyon star Nemanja Matic, who branded him one of the worst goalkeepers in United's history, Onana could not afford any slip-ups.

But his calamitous 25th-minute cock-up, palming the ball into his own net, and another error deep into added time underlined his status as a liability and gave credence to Matic's savage barb.

United looked to have done enough to win the game, with Leny Yoro equalising just before half-time and sub Joshua Zirkzee heading them in front with two minutes to go.

But Onana had one more gaffe in his locker, spilling a shot from Corentin Tolisso, allowing Rayan Cherki to score from the rebound and earn a dramatic draw in the 95th minute.

It was a gut-wrenching end to a game United deserved to win but the fault lies entirely with Onana, whose individual mistakes ultimately cost Ruben Amorim's side.
