Lebanese vow to find killer who is on the run

THE TAOISEACH has brought up the ongoing search for justice for Private Sean Rooney at a meeting with the Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Private Rooney died when his armoured UN vehicle came under fire while travelling to Beirut in December 2022.

The 24-year-old was the first Irish soldier to die while on UN peacekeeping duty in Lebanon in more than 20 years. Three others were injured in the incident.

His family has slammed the subsequent trial of several local militants as a "sham." The main defendant in the case Mohammad Ayyad was sentenced to death in his absence but remains at large.
