Late penalty denies Rovers a famous win

THIS was neither a Greek classic nor a Greek tragedy but somewhere in between.

Shamrock Rovers were so close to a famous win, 90 minutes were on the clock when AEK equalised from the spot.

Until then, a Rovers team which had no Rory Gaffney, no Josh Honohan and a bench stacked with Matt Healy, Danny Grant and Danny Mandroiu defied the odds.

For 90 minutes they were on the verge of beating AEK to register the best European result yet of the Stephen Bradley era.

But they couldn't hang on.

Even so, this draw keeps them in the hunt for the knockout stages after two defeats from their opening two group games.
