DROGHEDA United boss Kevin Doherty says he wants “gradual improvement” every season but that he would have no problem spending money if a big transfer kitty was handed to him.

The Boynesiders boss has overseen a remarkable turnaround from this time last year, when United were favourites for relegation.

12 months later and they are FAI Cup champions, while they are also flying high in the Premier Division, having pulled off some eyecatching results.

They have won away to Derry City and Shelbourne, and in their last two fixtures they have been unlucky not to get more than a point each against the same two sides.

"It's all about picking up more points so I'm not even thinking about league positions but look how far we've come in the last 12 months," he said.
