Prez praise for Ireland as new embassy opens

- NEIL LESLIE

DONALD Trump has paid a glowing tribute to Ireland in a personal letter, declaring: “God Bless the Republic of Ireland.”

Days after lambasting the United Nations and European countries for “going to hell”, President Trump penned a signed letter to mark the opening of Ireland's new embassy in Washington on Pennsylvania Avenue close to the White House.

He wrote: “Welcome to the neighbourhood! May God bless you, may He bless the Republic of Ireland and may He bless the United States of America.”

Trump added: “The United States and Ireland have enjoyed a long and storied friendship sustained by mutual economic interests, a common cultural heritage, a shared commitment to national sovereignty and the timeless values of faith, family and freedom.”
