Dublin pad big stretch for 1st-time buyers

- BY DANNY DE VAAL & CIARA O'LOUGHLIN

Got to coff' up

CAFFEINE-loving Dubs would need to resist buying a cup of coffee every day for more than 41 years in order to afford a house deposit for a pad in the capital.

The analysis from Chill Insurance said the average deposit for a home in Dublin is €61,401.23 with the average price of a cup of joe being €4.08.

In order to save this deposit, househunters would need to miss out on 41 years' worth of daily coffees which equates to more than 15,000.

In Wicklow, it would take more than 34 years of people skipping their daily caffeine fix for them to raise the funds required for the €46,000 deposit needed there.

Kildare completes the top three, with an average house deposit of €40,616.46 and an average coffee price of €3.89. To save for this deposit, you would need to forgo coffee for nearly 29 years, which equates to 10,441 coffees.

Experts say skipping a daily coffee would be helpful but clearly it isn't enough by itself.
