THE BIG ISSUES..EVERY DAY
MONEY is one of the leading causes of breakups, with 28% of couples arguing about finances at least once a week.
However, one partner can be the big problem - and there are red flags to watch out for.
Here, money guru PAUL MERRIMAN, leading financial advisor at AskPaul money advice website, lists his seven Financial Red Flags in Relationships.
From the Debt Denier to the Constant Borrower and the Guilt Tripper, here's how to spot them.
The Debt Denier:A partner who avoids money discussions, downplays their debt, or refuses to take responsibility for their financial situation is a red flag.
Ignoring debt doesn't make it disappear, and a partner who consistently dodges financial accountability could put both your relationship and your financial stability at risk.
How to spot one
- They brush off debt as a "No big deal" and downplay their financial situation
- They get defensive about money talks with avoidance, excuses, or even anger.
- They make minimum payments or ignore bills.
- They lie beyond their means - their lifestyle doesn't match their income, but they insist they're stable.
The Financially Secretive Partner:
This is the one who keeps their earnings, spending, debts, or financial decisions hidden.
Financial secrecy can be just as damaging as financial irresponsibility, as it breeds distrust, fuels misunderstandings, and can lead to long-term financial instability.
How to spot one
- They have "mystery money" - you don't know their income or where it goes.
- They keep separate accounts.
