ASTON VILLA ended their 21-year wait for a Premier League win at St James’ Park as they went level on points with Manchester City.

- BY DAMIAN SPELLMAN

Villa had not tasted victory on Toon turf in 17 attempts in the league, going back to January 2005.

But Emi Buendia’ss sweet strike set Villa on their way to a hard-fought win, with Ollie Watkins’ late header securing victory.

The win owed much to two fine first-half saves by Emi Martinez from Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley as Eddie Howes men came up short.

Villa boss Unai Emery said: “I am so, so happy. The players were extraordinary.

“We spoke about this match and the difficulties some teams have with their level here. It is the highest level we can face this season and the players respond fantastically.

“The commitment to the fans, being so disciplined individually and collectively got us through it.

“We can only help the players tactically. Out on the field they need to show the attitude and commitment to work to the game plan. And they did it.
