TUESDAY marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, which began as a concept in 1970 to highlight environmental problems.

To many that will conjure amusing images of beaded hippies living in free love compounds and looking to turn on, hug trees and drop out.

In fact, it started with an even stranger sight, two American politicians - one a Democrat and the other a Republican - who shared a concern for what 150 years of perpetual indus-trial growth had done to things like the air we breathe and the water we drink.
