Tanaiste wants under 16s off social media

IRELAND must ban social media usage for anyone under 16, the Tanaiste has said.

Simon Harris has called for a “baring of teeth” when it comes to children’s social media access, and enforcement of the digital consent age.

The Data Protection Act 2018 established the digital consent age at 16.

The act requires online service providers, such as social media platforms, which depend on consent as their legal foundation for processing personal data, to secure parental consent for children to use the platforms.
