Flood alert as storm to batter Ireland today

- BY ANDREW E QUINN and ALEX DUNNE

SWATHES of the country are on high flood alert as Storm Bram is set to drench Ireland today.

Householders and motorists were warned waterlogged ground, high tides and heavy driving rain could combine in a floody perfect storm during peak rush hour.

Met Eireann has Yellow and Orange weather warnings for the entire country ahead of the extreme event.

Meteorologist Holly O'Neill said: "It's going to be an impactful event, and as you know, these impacts can vary on where you are located.

"Southern counties are going to experience very heavy and thundery rain but in saying that it’s still going to be a wet day across the country.

IMPACTS

"With regards to the winds, again, it’s likely we'll see the most impacts on southern and western coastal fringes.

"That low pressure will track to the west of us from tomorrow morning and through tomorrow."

"This is also coinciding with high tide, so it's likely we will see coastal flooding in exposed, low lying areas.
