BANK ON AMEX

DANNY WELBECK wants Brighton to make the Amex a fortress - and Newcastle can certainly testify to the fact it's a tough place to visit.

The veteran striker shows no signs of slowing down after the 34-year-old bagged a clinical brace to make it four in the last three games and continue the Geordies' wretched record on this part of the South Coast.

Newcastle returned north without a victory at Brighton's impressive home for a ninth straight season and former Manchester United star Welbeck said: "It's a big win.

"At home we've not quite had the results we wanted this season. We knew that we could make a statement today.

"It was nice to get the goals to seal a win and we're keen to build a fortress here - we're on our way to doing that." Welbeck has struck up a threatening partnership with former Leeds forward Georginio Rutter, who set up the first goal (below) and he added: "We've got a great connection and it was an incredible pass from Georginio for the opener.

"I know when he is in those sorts of positions and he's looking to slide the ball through, or I make a movement and he can go through and take a shot himself.

"We have got a good connection that we're looking to build on.

"It is always difficult to win a Premier League game, so today is a testament to the character and the belief within the group to keep on pushing."
