Italian President Sergio Mattarella said the message and a tour in his popemobile seemed to be his “final goodbye” to the Church and people.

Speaking about wars raging in places such as Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, he added: “What a great thirst for death, for killing, we witness each day in the many conflicts around the world.
