Very important at Christmas to remember those less fortunate...

Every day they are chased by a conviction of their own worthlessness, a belief that they amount to no more than a fading biro stain on the page of life.

How unimaginably awful must that be? How petrifying and chilling and soul-crushing?

Cast adrift in the bargain bucket of life day after day, week after week, year after endless year. Ignored, tiny, ephemeral.

It is not, as some would have it, a them and us situation. The borders between the two tribes, the fortunate and the broken, are open. There are frequent crossings, most often in the downward direction.

A life-altering movement from one group to the other can require just an untimely push from fate, for one of “us” to become one of “them”.
