Lowry sets new record on green as he parks concern over cup place

- BY JOSEPH MCBRIDE

SHANE PUTTS IT ALL BEHIND HIM

SHANE LOWRY put his Ryder Cup concerns aside and carded a seven-under 63 at the Tour Championship as he set a new FedEx Cup record with a 97-foot putt.

Lowry smashed the previous best after putting from range on the 14th hole, surpassing Dustin Johnson’ effort from 2020.

Johnson made a 45-foot putt at the BMW Championship and, although Jon Rahm sank a 66-foot putt in the same tournament, it didn’t count as it was during a playoff.

It has been a frustrating end to the season for Lowry, who has not secured a top 10 finish on the PGA Tour since May.

As a result, his Ryder Cup status has yet to be confirmed and he faces an anxious wait.

But he has started well at the Tour Championship and is currently tied-seventh heading into the weekend.

The Offaly star was even after the first round but shot 63 yesterday to climb up the leaderboard.
