Lowry holds his nerve to keep trophy in European hands and Hatton completes a dramatic away win

SHANE LOWRY fought back tears as the Irishman won the half point to retain the Ryder Cup last night.

And Tyrrell Hatton then ensured the first away victory since 2012 as Europe held off a remarkable USA fightback on a dramatic final day.

Luke Donald's men had been the first away team to win all four sessions to lead 11.5 to 4.5. And the injury to Viktor Hovland meant Team Europe needed only two points to retain the trophy won in Rome two years ago.

But the USA fought hard all day and Ludvig Aberg was the only European to win a singles match.
