Independent TD Catherine Connolly began her presidential campaign before all the others in July, and it paid off as she won with a resounding 63% of the vote.

The bigger parties didn't dare to send their hopefuls out before the media in August, as it's deemed 'silly season' with little going on.

But it worked for Ms Connolly, as her bid was largely won online as she dominated podcasts and social media feeds.
