'Distraught' tenants served notices of termination as TD blasts rent reforms

FAMILIES are “worried and distraught" after 36 households received eviction notices in Wexford, a local TD said.

Notices of termination were issued to families renting in the Hazelwood Estate in Bridgetown, affecting around 100 people.

Households received the notices last Friday, just two days before new rent reforms came into place on March 1.

Under the new rules, landlords can raise the price of rent to “market rate” every six years for any tenancies that began on or after March 1 of this year.

For any tenancies before this date the old rules apply, where rents can only be raised by 2% annually.
